Oprah once said, “The greatest adventure is to live life through your dreams.” More than a dozen area students aimed to do just that as they put their talents on display Saturday night at Leeds Center for the Arts.
“For Those Who Dare to Dream,” a musical theatre revue, was the culmination of a two-week-long summer theater intensive workshop hosted at Leeds.
“Our goal at Leeds theater and what we work for all year long is to bring art to the community, but more than that at Leeds, it’s about providing opportunities for children who may not fit elsewhere,” Leeds board President Tracey Miller said. “We want them to understand that they are accepted and belong and that they can do really great work.
“These are some of the most talented kids you’ll see in the region.”
For the past two weeks the students rehearsed for Saturday’s production while also taking lessons from guest speakers on things like stage presence, vocal performance and choreography.
The students had the opportunity to put those lessons in action with 20 performances from 17 musicals, some well-known and others more obscure.
More than learning to peform on stage, the program also focused on dreaming big.
“We’ve talk a lot about dreaming this week,” Steve Crosby, who directed the revue, said. “We’ve also talked about the theater being a safe place to come and share your talents and try new things.
“I think that’s what I’ve enjoyed seeing the most with these kids. To see them have a chance to grow.”
