Wednesday night, the George Rogers Clark Cardinals made history by claiming the 39th District Championship and ending a decade-plus reign of dominance by Montgomery County.
The Cards (14-5-2) demolished the rival Indians on their home pitch with a 7-1 victory. The district title is the first for GRC since the 2007 squad claimed the old 24th district crown and went on to the state tournament.
The defeat was Indians’ first ever in the 39th District tournament and first district loss since the 2010 24th District semifinals.
The Cards earned their date with Montgomery County with a 10-0 victory over Paris.
Stats for the Montgomery County and Paris games were not available at press time.
Seniors Clay Turley and PK Vogel split the team’s golden boot, each scoring 16 goals across 19 games. The senior due accounted for half the team’s 64 goals during the regular season.
Turley claimed the assist king crown with ten. Vogel was his next closest competition with six.
Lady Cards claim another district crown
The GRC Lady Cards (9-6-3) made history of their own Wednesday night by claiming yet another district crown.
The team’s 3-1 victory over the Montgomery County Lady Indians was their eighth straight district title. Stats were not available at press time.
The Lady Cards won the right to defend their district crown by virtue of a 10-0 shellacking of the Paris Lady Greyhounds.
Senior Madison Stapleton’s hat trick led the GRC attack. Freshmen Emma Cecil and Betty Sutherland, and junior Ella Vanhooser each bagged a brace, while junior Reese Patrick closed out the scoring with a single goal.
Stapleton’s 15 goals were good enough to win her the Lady Cards’ scoring crown. Vanhooser came in a close second with 12 goals.
Patrick and Vanhooser finished tied with a team-high three assists on the season.
