The woman charged with stabbing a man with a knife at a Winchester homeless shelter last year is competent to stand trial.

Michelle Hunter, 44, was arrested Nov. 10, 2019, following the incident at the Beacon of Hope Emergency Shelter on Bypass Road.

According to court documents, there was a competency hearing in Clark Circuit Court Nov. 19 before Clark Circuit Judge Jean Chenault Logue. Following testimony of medical personnel, Logue ruled that Hunter was competent to be tried for first-degree assault.

The report was placed in the case file under seal.

Her case is scheduled for a pretrial conference Jan. 21, 2021.

Winchester Police officers were called to the shelter on a Sunday morning. The victim told police he was sitting on the edge of a bed when Hunter approached and started stabbing him with a large kitchen knife.

The injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The victim told police he did not recall any prior incidents with Hunter that would have prompted a stabbing.

Most of the injuries were to the victim’s torso and back, police said. Prosecutors said later the victim had a skull fracture as well.

Hunter is being held in the Clark County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
