A Winchester woman told police she only intended to scare a man she believed had molested her daughter.

Instead, sheriff’s deputies in Pulaski County say she kidnapped the man, shot him in the leg and then disposed of the gun and the victim’s phone.

Jayme Danielle Barker, 34, of 3 W. Lexington Ave., pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of kidnapping, first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence in Pulaski District Court.

According to a news release from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and EMS personnel were called to Brock Road in Nancy Friday, where Jermaine Bennett Jr. of Winchester was found with a gunshot wound to one leg and zip ties around a wrist and an ankle.

Barker was identified as a suspect, but was not located until Saturday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to the citation, Barker was interviewed by detectives and admitted to driving Bennett to Pulaski County on March 26, along with another person.

When they reached Nancy, Barker said she and the other male dragged Bennett from the vehicle. Barker said she brandished a pistol and shot Bennett, before they drove back to Somerset. Bennett was left behind.

During the return trip, Barker said she threw the pistol and Bennett’s phone into a lake.

According to the citation, Barker said she “wanted to scare him but didn’t mean for the incident to go as far as it did.”

Maj. Jeff Hancock of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said the second person in the car has been identified and a warrant has been obtained for the person’s arrest.

Barker is being held in the Pulaski County Detention Center. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
