Steve Humble jokes it took 69 years to live the experiences in his new book and only 20 years to write it down.

Humble, a longtime pastor with Winchester Covenant Church, recently published “For Such a Time as This?”

While not a memoir in the strictest sense of the word, it follows his spiritual journey from the time he was a young man rebelling against his father through the death of his own son from a heart attack in 1996 and to the present as a grandfather to 14.

The book started as something private for Humble’s other children and son Elijah’s friends in the wake of this sudden death July 4, 1996.

“It was always going to be a book,” Humble said. “My son and I got very close around the time he was 14 or 15. We had always dreamed of working together to make an impact on the younger people of his generation.”

Two decades later, Humble thinks the topics are just as relevant with the youth of this generations.

“The first motivating factor is that there will be younger people reading it and finding a committed relationship and understanding of the gospel,” he said.

Part of Humble’s journey in that was rooted in his difficult relationship with his own father, which is not uncommon.

“There are a tremendous amount of people in pain because of their fathers,” he said.

There was a point, which he detailed in the book, where a conversation with God allowed him to accept his father for who he was as a person and look to God to fulfill his needs.

The other thing, he said, was accepting the call into service.

“We are called by Jesus into a way of life, not just a conversion experience,” Humble said. “Jesus didn’t come to make converts. He came to make disciples.”

After nearly seven decades, Humble acknowledges he’s far from an expert and he is still growing and learning in his faith as well.

“I’m not very close, but I’m closer than I used to be,” he said. “At 69 years old, I realize I don’t know how far I have to go, but there is a lot of changing going on.”

Humble will be signing copies of his book from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Clark County Public Library.
