A Winchester man died Saturday afternoon after he was struck by a CSX train near Vine and Broadway streets the night before.
Mark P. Lewis, 51, died in the University of Kentucky Medical Center at 2:35 p.m. Saturday, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s office.
According to Winchester Police, the incident was reported around 7 p.m. Friday near the railroad crossing in downtown Winchester.
“There was an individual trying to cross the tracks and beat the train,” Winchester Police Capt. Harvey Craycraft said.
Witnesses told police they saw Lewis running down the sidewalk and across the tracks before he got “clipped” by the train.
Craycraft said Lewis was unconscious and unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to the UK Medical Center with a head laceration, he said.
Craycraft said Winchester Police were called to the scene to assist other agencies.
CSX Transportation police is handling the investigation, he said
