A Winchester mother will have a trial in March after her two children ingested cocaine while in her home last year.

Anniquita Wright, 31, is facing two counts of first-degree criminal abuse for the incident, after tests showed her two children had cocaine in their systems.

According to Winchester Police, the investigation began after Wright’s 4-year-old child was lethargic and had difficulty waking up at the Winchester Head Start facility. The child was transported to Clark Regional Medical Center where tests found the child had swallowed cocaine.

Subsequent tests showed Wright’s 2-year-old child also had cocaine in its system.

Wright told police she allowed a friend to sell drugs from her home, but officers found none when they searched the residence. Police believe the drugs were accessible and the children got into them, rather than the drugs intentionally being given to the children.

Wright is also facing a second-degree persistent felony offender charge, which could enhance any sentences upon conviction.

The trial was scheduled Monday in Clark Circuit Court, following an evidence suppression hearing. Clark Circuit Judge Jean Chenault Logue overruled the suppression motion.
