Man charged with beating three with bat

A Winchester man was jailed after allegedly beating three people with a baseball bat over a stolen backpack.

Florencio Alexander Espinoza, 27, of 27 E. Washington St., was arrested Thursday morning for second-degree assault after the incident, which left two of the victims with broken arms.

According to court records, Winchester Police officers were called to the apartment building around 4:39 a.m. Thursday and found three people who Espinoza struck them with a baseball bat.

Espinoza and his girlfriend were located in another apartment, taken to the police department and interviewed.

According to the arrest citation, Espinoza initially denied having anything to do with the incident, but later said one of the victims stole a backpack from him and made a pass at his girlfriend. Espinoza told police he confronted the three about the stolen backpack and began swinging the bat when they approached him.

All three victims were transported to Clark Regional Medical Center. Police said two of them had broken arms. A third, a woman, had facial injuries as well as bruises on her back and leg.

Espinoza was lodged in the Clark County Detention Center.
