A man who walked away from a jail work crew last week and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty to escape charges Monday.

Curtis Reece, 33, was serving a state sentence for theft in the Clark County Detention Center, but was approved to be on work release. Reece allegedly walked away from a work crew June 19 near Boonesboro Road, Clark County Jailer Frank Doyle said. Reece was arrested almost two days later in Clay City along with his girlfriend Kimberly Burton.

Both Reece and Kimberly Burton, also 33, were arrested and charged with second-degree escape.

Monday afternoon, automatic not-guilty pleas were entered for both, as they are facing a felony charge. Reece is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Clark District Court July 11. Burton, who posted bond Monday, will have her preliminary hearing July 25.

Doyle said Reece and Burton were located after police used technology to trace the signal from Burton’s cell phone, after obtaining a warrant. The pair was arrested without incident, Doyle said previously.
