Charles stays steady, captures WCC Club title
On a day when steady play was not necessarily front and center for the leaders, Justin Charles was steady enough to overcome a late round mistake and claim the 2019 Men’s Club Championship at the Winchester Country Club last weekend.
In the end his four under par 70-70–140 edged runner up Tyler Fields (74-68 – 142) and third place finisher Shane Jenkins (75-68 – 143) for the title, but it didn’t come without some drama.
Taking a three shot lead into round two, Charles appeared to be in cruise control until he double bogeyed the 34th hole, letting Fields and Jenkins back into the hunt.
While Fields had overcome a triple bogey on the 21st hole with a birdie barrage to pull within one stroke, Jenkins had likewise cut the lead to one by playing the first 17 holes of the day in six under par.
Unfortunately, Jenkins thinned his second shot to the final green which led to a double bogey finish and Charles slammed the door shut on Fields with a birdie on the final hole.
Fourth went to Jason Divita (145), followed by J. R. Maxam (148), and Ryan Midden (149).
Steady as you go Todd Howard won the Senior Division and Steve Adams captured the Net Championship.
