Our View: Still plenty to enjoy this summer
Now that the Fourth of July has passed, many have set their eyes on the next major holiday and some may even be thinking about returning to school in a few weeks. But there is still plenty of summer to enjoy, and Winchester-Clark County’s calendar is chock full of things to do in July and August.
While this list is in no way comprehensive, here are some exciting things to look forward to in the coming weeks:
— Bluegrass Community and Technical College’s Moonlight Movie Nights return July 12 with a showing of Disney’s “Dumbo.” The event starts at 7 p.m. at the BCTC Winchester-Clark County Campus, 2020 Rolling Hills Lane. Admission is free. There will be food trucks, inflatable slides, vendor booths, popcorn, snow cones, silent auctions and giveaways. Movies will begin at dusk, around 9 p.m. “Mary Poppins Returns” will be shown July 19 and “How to Train A Dragon: The Hidden World” will be shown July 26.
— 5 Star Advertisement’s third annual Glow Festival is set for 6 p.m. July 13 at Lykins Park. Live music, food vendors, beer, glow-themed vendors and camping out, face paint and glow sticks. For tickets, visit 5staradvertisement.com or eventbrite.com.
— The next installment of the Rock The Block summer concert series will be 7 to 9 pm. July 19 on Main Street in downtown Winchester. The Bent Penny Band will be the featured artist.
— If you’re feeling like giving back to the community, the annual Strode Creek Clean-up is set for 9:30 a.m. to noon July 25 on Barnes Drive. You’ll get a free T-shirt while you help beautify the community.
— The Bicycle Rodeo will teach kiddos how to have fun while being safe from 9 a.m. to noon July 27 at Lykins Park. And while they’re being educated, participants can earn some prizes. There will be games, giveaways, ice cream and T-shirts. Bring a bicycle and a helmet.
— Of course, the Winchester-Clark County Farmers’ Market is also still open Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon all summer long.
On top of these events there are plenty of other fun things to get involved in throughout Clark County. We often hear that there is nothing to do in Winchester, but that’s really not the case.
There’s something to do nearly every weekend and often on weeknights, especially throughout the summer. Take a look at our daily Community Calendar to keep up with all that is going on.
You may have to step outside your comfort zone and try something new in your own backyard this summer.
