Farmers’ market plans to hit the road with senior days

The Winchester-Clark County Farmers’ Market is hitting the road.

The program is expanding its offerings with its first senior market Thursday morning on Depot Street, which is something new, market manager Jennifer Klinglesmith said.

The offerings will be the same as the regular Tuesday and Saturday markets, but it will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, she said.

“We plan on trying to do four of these and see how they do,” Klinglesmith said. “We’ll move them around the community.”

Two more senior markets are already scheduled for Aug. 15 and Aug. 22, she said, though locations have not been finalized.

“We’re trying to get it to more people and reach out to the senior populations and those who have Senior Bucks,” she said. “We double those (vouchers) with Kentucky Double Dollars.”

Klinglesmith said the market is also discussing staging some pop-up markets in areas of the community which could be considered food deserts, or areas without easy access to affordable, quality fresh food.

The market can also double purchases with EBT, SNAP or WIC programs, she said.
