The Clark County Board of Education got its first look at potential calendars for the 2020-21 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

The board was presented two calendar options that mirrored each other excepted potential spring break dates.

According to the options presented, the opening day for staff would be Aug. 10. Opening day for teachers would Aug. 11 and opening day for students would be Aug. 12.

There would be a day off for Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7, and then fall break would be Oct. 16-19.

There would be no school Nov. 3 for election day and school would be out Wednesday, Nov. 25, through Friday, Nov. 27 for Thanksgiving.

Christmas break would fall Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, 2021.

There would be a teacher work day Feb. 12, 2021, when students would be out. Schools would be closed President’s Day, Feb. 15, 2021, which would be used as a possible make-up day in the case of inclement weather closings earlier in the year.

The two spring break options listed were for March 29 through April 2 or April 5-9.

Both calendar options list the last day for students at May 14, 2021, with teacher work days and staff closing days later in the month.

The board did not take action on either calendar Tuesday, but made the first reading and asked for more input from district administrators and teachers.

Director of District Pupil and Personnel Greg Hollon presented the two calendar options, which he said were developed by a committee of representatives from each school.

He said most of the feedback the committee received is that teachers, administrators and parents like the calendar used in the the 2019-20 school year and wanted the next calendar to reflect that same schedule.

“The overwhelming thing we heard was that they loved the calendar this year and wanted something similar,” he said.

The board will need to have two readings of the proposed calendars before making the official decision, which does not have to be one of the calendar options presented at Tuesday’s meeting.

“You do not have to take either of these recommendations,” Hollon said. “It is in your power to do whatever you want. As a committee, it is our job to present you two options. But whatever is chosen is up to you.”

The board is set to discuss the calendar options again at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. March 16 at Central Office.
