A hit-and-run call turned into much more after the suspect crashed in front of a sheriff’s deputy early Thursday morning.

Robert M. Martin, 52, of 2865 Pilot View Road, was arrested after he hit an embankment with his pickup truck while attempting to avoid law enforcement, according to court records.

Clark County Deputy Sheriff Bobby Estes said he observed a maroon pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed on Maple Street, according to court documents. The pickup was believed to have been involved a hit-and-run incident, and Estes said the truck was traveling at 80 mph in a 45 zone.

Estes said he attempted to catch up to the truck and turned on his cruiser’s blue lights. The truck tried to merge onto westbound Interstate 64, but went off the road and struck an embankment.

Estes said the driver tried to free the truck, but eventually put it in park, got out of the truck and was arrested.

Martin appeared to be intoxication and admitted to drinking a “few beers” and “having way too much to drink,” according to the citation. Estes said Martin smelled of alcohol, stumbled and had slurred speech.

Martin was transported to Clark Medical Center and then to the Clark County Detention Center.

Martin was charged with speeding, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident (two counts), driving under the influence, resisting arrest and failure to wear a seat belt.
