Man charged in baseball bat beating

A Winchester man was arrested for allegedly beating a man with a baseball bat and breaking several bones in the process.

Joshua S. Charles, 31, of 103 Southern Court, was arrested Friday for first-degree assault, according to court records.

The victim, Kelly Combs, said he spent part of June 20 with Charles, watching a movie and drinking alcohol, according to the warrant.

Combs said they were walking back to a bridge around 6 p.m. when Charles hit him from behind with a bat.

Combs said he woke up about eight hours later lying on the railroad tracks, but made it to Freeman Corporation where employees called for an ambulance.

Combs said he was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he stayed for five days with multiple broken bones and head trauma.

According to court documents, Combs said Charles invited him over that day to hang out.

He said Charles showed him an antique wooden baseball bat and said, “I want to kill everyone around me.”

Combs said he told Charles not to think that way, but they went to Washington Street Liquor and bought a fifth of alcohol and then went under a bridge to consume it.

They later went to meet one of Charles’ cousins, but were returning to the bridge when Combs said he was hit.

Charles had been released on bond for another assault charge in May when he allegedly punched deputy jailers at the Clark County Detention Center following another arrest. He is facing a third-degree assault charge from that incident. That case is still pending in court.

Charles is being held on a $25,000 cash bond in the Clark County Detention Center.
