McCann: Halloween brings treats, scares
The season of costumes, scary thrills, dances and stories are upon us.
Check out these seasonal opportunities in nearby communities.
Ghostly Tales
Ghost stories are being featured before the fireplace at the parsonage of Andrew Tribble in Madison county.
Located just up the hill on from Fort Boonesborough State Park on 627, the parsonage has been restored by Russell Rechenbach who hosts teas and special events.
Storyteller C. Ed Bryson will share “Ghostly Tales” Friday.

Chamber music salon
Dr. Danielle King will host an evening of chamber music featuring cello, violin, harp and piano at her home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets are $25.

Lexington Philharmonic
This season is one devoted not only to good music, but also to selecting the orchestra’s next conductor.
A concert program featuring Libby Larsen’s “Deep Summer Music,” two harp pieces by Ginastera and concluding with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major will be Akiko Fujimoto, associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, is Saturday.

Queen Machine
Europe’s best Queen tribute band comes to Frankfort’s Grand Theatre, 308 St. Clair St., Saturday to perform Freddy Mercury and the band’s songs including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Radio Ga Ga” and many other hits.
Tickets range from $30 to $45. Concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
Pumpkin carving, spooky stories & zombie walk
Mount Sterling’s Gateway Regional Arts Center is sponsoring a pumpkin carving and spooky stories event at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 before the “Zombie Walk” and Thriller Parade at 7:30 p.m.
There is a suggested donation of $5 for the pumpkin carving and stories event at the center, 101 E. Main St., in Mount Sterling. For more information call 859-498-6264.
Cynthiana Ghost Walks
Friday and Saturday nights in October you can take an hour-long ghost walk through downtown Cynthiana visiting such places as the old jail, the log cabin and Renaker Inn. Walks begin at 8 and 9 p.m. each night at the Roh’s Opera House, 133 E. Pike St.
If you can find nine other daring souls, special walks can be scheduled Monday through Thursday. Tickets are $10. Call 859-234-9803 for more information.
Haunted Houses
If you enjoyed the local haunted house at College Park Gym — and want the scaring season to continue — here are a few possibilities, of many, available in our region of the state:
— The Edge of Darkness Haunted House, 128 Mt. Vernon Road, Berea, Tickets are $15.
— Misery Manor, 100 Secretariat Way, Frankfort. Tickets are $5.
— Fright Nights at Jacobson Park features three haunted attractions named Dark Forest, Candyland and 13 Doors. Doors open at 8 p.m. Fright Nights runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Tickets range from $18 to $38, plus tax.
— Trail of Whispering Woods (Whispering Woods Riding Stables) in Georgetown. Take a wagon deep into the woods. First hayride goes out at dusk around 8 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Carrie: The Musical
Carrie is one of a few Halloween season musicals. End Halloween on a high note by attending a performance of this musical based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. Performances are Halloween night and Nov. 1 at the Paramount Arts Center, 1300 Winchester Ave. in Ashland. Really into Halloween? See both performances on Halloween, at 7:30 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.; tickets are $25.
EKU Center for the Arts
Both country and pop music fans might want to check out Gary Allan who will be playing Nov. 2 at the Center for the Arts in Richmond. Allan’s most recent album, “Set You Free,” topped the Billboard Pop Chart even as it made its debut at the top of the Billboard Country Album chart.
A song from that album “Every Storm Runs Out Of Rain” went to number one on the Country chart. Tickets range from $39.50 to $99.50.
