Girl Scout Troop 7377 donated a blue bench made out of recycled bottle caps to Brown Proctor Apartments Tuesday in honor of Marco Shemwell.

Marco Shemwell, a 4-year-old from Winchester, died after being struck by a car near Kroger Field during a University of Kentucky football game in Lexington in September while he and his family were waiting to cross Cooper Driver near Scoville Drive.

Marco died Sept. 17 at the Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

The Scouts made the bottle cap benches to encourage people to recycle and dedicated it to be a part of keeping Marco’s memory alive.

“We hope Marco’s memory lives on with this bench,” Junior Scout Claudia Rouse said.

“And that bench is his favorite color,” Junior Scout Jordyn Hargis said.

The bench was part of a project requirement for scouts to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Girl Scouts can pursue the bronze award if they are in the fourth or fifth grade and have completed their junior journey.

Troop leader Kyla Hargis previously told The Sun the bronze award is a group project that has to be sustainable.

Nine Junior Scouts put in 20 hours and more in planning and working on the project. They collected more than 100 pounds of lids to make the bench.

Jordyn said she was happy the project was finally over. The scouts started working on the project in October.

Marco’s mother, Elizabeth Gilpin Shemwell, thanked the troop from the bottom of her heart.

“I can’t tell you how much these things mean to us,” Elizabeth told the crowd. “Thanks for keeping his memory alive.”
