Baldwin: Ghostbusters marks 35th anniversary

Greetings, my spirited cinephiles of Winchester!

We like to think we are in control of our lives. We have our daily routines, our hectic schedules and our stubborn drive to “control” our daily happenings.

Every day, it seems you work hard to fight forces that want to throw a monkey wrench into your plans and block you from your goals.

In all reality, we do not have control.

But we do have control over how we respond to the curve balls or this perceived chaos that others and life throw at us.

It is about perspective, continuing to press on when others would quit and responding to this chaos in an effective manner we see ourselves shine at the end of each day.

Today’s classic comedy horror, fantasy feature, “Ghostbusters” (1984), is a tale of fighting ghosts for our heroes to restore good order for the citizens of New York City.

“Ghostbusters” stars Bill “Peter Venkman” Murray, Dan “Ray Stantz” Aykroyd and Harold “Egon Spengler” Ramis as fired paranormal university scientists who open shop in an old firehouse and become a mashup of first responders and garbage men to combat the current epidemic of ectoplasmic ghosts haunting scared residents of Big Apple to its chilling and comedic core.

The ghost busting business is a lucrative 24/7 gig which finds the trio in over their heads, so they add Annie “Janine” Potts and Ernie “Winston” Hudson to the team as they battle ghosts, the mayor’s office, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, an evil witch who possesses Venkman’s love interest, along with Sigourney “Dana” Weaver and her likeable nerdish neighbour Rick “Louis” Moranis which threaten all of humanity.

“Ghostbusters” boasts an incredible cast and was written by comedy greats, Aykroyd and Ramis, and directed by Ivan “Kindergarten Cop” Reitman. “Ghostbusters” at the time of its release was an oddity of sorts since it was a successful special-effects blockbuster ($30 million budget) which delivered in the eye candy and visual frights department while keeping in step with the one-liner adlibbed comedy accustomed to the stars attached. It raked in more than $240 million green slimed dollars.

“Ghostbusters” was and is still such a successful film property and soundtrack. After 35 years, it is not hard to find merchandise, video games and toy tie-ins to the popular original film which also spawned a remake in 2016, a few animated series, and two sequels in 1989 and the third currently being filmed with a 2020 release date.

Restore some good order to your chaotic lives by picking up the phone and giving Ghostbusters a call as this is a great, funny fright flick that first-time viewers will enjoy.

For repeat viewers and diehard Ghostbuster fans, let’s get slimed one more time. I promise, ghost bustin’ will make you feel good.

“Ghostbusters” will be presented by Fathom Events and includes a brand-new introduction by Murray, Aykroyd, Weaver, Reitman, Hudson and Potts to be played before the film in honor of the film’s anniversary.

Show times are 4 p.m. Sunday and 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday at the Regal in Hamburg, Cinemark Cinemas at Fayette Mall and the Movie Tavern at Brannon Crossing.

Have a phantasmal film-tastic day!
