Nestled under tents by handcrafted campfires, dozens of Strode Station Elementary School students listened to good stories while chowing down on hotdogs, chips and smores.

Strode Station held its first Community Literacy Night of the year Tuesday at Westwood Apartments.

Ros Gay, family resource center coordinator at Strode, said the night was a way to meet the families where they are and to be more involved in the community.

“We just really want to make sure we meet our families on their own turf,” Gay said.

Emma Montgomery and her son Weston also presented their donation of a Sharing Library during the event.

Strode will install the Sharing Library mailbox outside the school for students to exchange books any time they would like.

Every student who attended the event Tuesday received a free book and some students even went home with headphones because they won a raffle drawing.

One lucky student received a new tablet courtesy of a community partner donation.
