The Big Cheesy set for June 7
It’s not often cheese and exercise are mentioned in the same breath, but next weekend’s Big Cheesy 5K combines both.
The event started in 2011 to benefit the Clark County Homeless Coalition, but was re-branded last year to connect with the Beer Cheese Festival, CCHC Director Terry Davidson said.
This year, the event begins at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, and coincides with the Rock the Block concert in downtown Winchester, featuring One Way Street.
“It’s been great,” Davidson said. “The tie-in with Rock the Block … has given a lot of energy to the event. Running it with the Beer Cheese Festival gave us a little more fun and silliness.”
The male and female winners will be crowned as the king and queen of cheese during the intermission of Rock the Block, she said. The team which raises the most money will win the Green Cheese award, and the Big Cheese award will go to the largest team, she said.
“We encourage cheesy costumes, whatever you interpret that to be,” she said.
The race begins at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, near Community Trust Bank on South Main Street. Registration begins at 6 p.m., though runners can register in advance online at runsignup.com.
The race is the coalitions’s second-largest fundraiser of the year, she said, and proceeds will support the coalition’s programs and efforts to help people escape homelessness permanently.
