Recovery focus of local art show
Achieving Recovery Together presented the 2019 Treasured A.R.T Show Wednesday at the Gallery at the Opera House.
Dozens of people perused the art pieces, made bids, mingled and enjoyed the food catered by Loma’s.
Mike Barry, a former LEX18 news anchor and now CEO of People Advocating Recovery, was the guest speaker at the event. He talked about being at the peak of his profession but behind it all was a man overwhelmed by the disease of alcoholism.
After three or so tries at treatment, Barry finally found the support he needed for sustainable recovery, he told the crowd. Now, Barry is about 25 years into his recovery and currently travels the country seeking to educate others about addiction, removing barriers and discrimination.
Barry told the crowd it’s important to be a face and voice of recovery, and he hopes others in recovery shed their “anonymity” and show the rest of the world, people can and do recover.
The art show was one part of the National Recovery Month efforts. Events continue tonight with the Rally4Recovery beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street and the Run4Recovery at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
