St. Joseph Catholic Church will host the 16th annual blue mass, remembering the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks while honoring Clark County’s first responders at 10 a.m. Sept. 11.

The annual service is organized by the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization operating under the precepts of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

The church’s first blue mass took place in 2002 as a way to remember the more than 2,900 people who lost their lives as a result of the attacks one year earlier. However, it soon grew into a community event recognizing local law enforcement and fire/EMS agencies and the daily impact they make on the community.

The mass has traditionally been attended by members of the Winchester Police Department, Winchester Fire Department, Clark County Fire Department and the Clark County Sheriff’s office. Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham and Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner also participate each year.

Following the mass, a light lunch will be served at the church.
