The morning of Saturday, November 23rd, may have been cold outside, but the indoor atmosphere on Lincoln Street presented a warm and friendly environment. 

The Baird-Churchwell Family Home Dedication took place, allowing another family to achieve their dream thanks to assistance from Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties. 

“This is a wonderful day that is going to cap only the first half of a great project,” said City Commissioner Shannon Cox, who also sits on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties. “Congratulations to some wonderful people!” 

The Baird-Churchwell family includes Michael Baird, Amber Churchwell, and their two sons – all of whom were present for the dedication. 

“I want to thank God most of all for our Habitat family [and] church,” Baird said. “This [home] is forever. It’s passing on to the next generation. It’s a hand-up for my family.” 

Among others also present at the event were City Manager Bruce Manley, City Commissioner Kenny Book, local business owner Carson Hunt, and Mayor JoEllen Reed. 

“It’s really nice to be here today. I felt a house of love as soon as I walked in here,” said Mayor Reed. “I had a great conversation with Amber and Michael…all of us are so blessed by every family we have up and down the street, and there will be even more.” 

By the time the event started at approximately 11:00 a.m., several staff members of HHMCC had arrived too. 

They included Board President Bryan Kirby, Board Member Bob Schaeffer, Family Mentor Amanda Dube, recently hired Volunteer Services Coordinator Trent Dolter, and Executive Director Mary Jo Hatchett. 

Dolter spoke of the enthusiasm by which dedications were taking place in Madison and Clark County. 

“Despite being kind of new, this will actually be my fifth or sixth home dedication,” he said. “Thanks [in part] to…volunteers, we made this house into a new home…I’m glad to be a part of that.” 

“I just truly can not say enough good things about this family,” said Hatchett. “Their work ethic is just unbelievable. They have exceeded their sweat equity hours…I just could not be more proud of them or happier for them.” 

In celebration of their new home, the event also featured the presentation of numerous quilts that the family can use for great purpose. 

Baird concluded by stating that he sees the home being utilized for many years to come. 

“It’s a start for my children,” he said. “[I hope] to grow old and [continue to] bring my children here.”
