As Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11, approaches, Winchester Elks Lodge #2816 is showing support in more ways than one.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, the organization held its annual Buffet Style Breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at its location of 255 Shoppers Drive.
The event – which was open to the public and cost a fee of just $12 – saw all proceeds benefit Veterans for Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2728.
“We’ve had several [veterans] in here today,” said Larry Hall, Exalted Ruler of Winchester Elks Lodge #2816. “We always try to take care of our veterans…veterans eat [for] free when they come in here.”
Upon entering, attendees found a bevy of delicious food options just to their left.
These included biscuits and gravy, sausage, eggs, pancakes, bacon, and more – all cooked up at the Elks Lodge itself.
While veterans were commonplace at the event, others joined as well.
Among them were local citizen Wallace “Gator” Harrison.
“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our veterans and the freedoms that they fought for,” he said. “As long as we keep them in our prayers and in our minds, I don’t think this country can go wrong.”
Clark County Magistrate Robert Blanton, along with his wife, Sue, also appeared.
When asked how important it is for Winchester to celebrate Veterans, he responded.
“It’s very important,” he said. “They’re the ones who gave their lives up so we can enjoy these days.”
Honoring veterans will continue this week, as the Elks Lodge looks forward to hosting its Veterans Day Recognition Program on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
As an event open to the general public and honoring those who have served, it will include hamburgers, hot dogs, and more.
While free to veterans, admission will be $5 for non-veterans.
