Summer break may be in full swing, but several Conkwright Elementary students came to their school Tuesday evening for the first harvest of vegetables from a garden planted earlier in the year.

In April, Conkwright partnered with the Clark County FFA to construct and plant six raised bed gardens in front of the school. The students planted a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage.

Since the initial planting, several more box gardens have been added to the project, waiting to be planted.

Principal Julie Bonfield said the project was funded by a grant through the Greater Clark Foundation. She added the school will host another event in July to plant more vegetables. In addition to providing fresh vegetables for students to take home, the garden will be used as a teaching tool by instructors at the school, Bonfield said.

Tuesday night, students pulled vegetables, washed and tasted them before taking some home to share with their families. They also painted rocks that will be put in the garden and planted some seeds to take a grow at home.
