In October, those visiting the Clark County Courthouse will find pink ribbons decorating the front and back steps. 

It’s no coincidence. 

The task – which takes place each October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month – was undertaken by Pink Ribbon Partners, a group of breast cancer survivors dedicated to supporting others. 

“[We] started out really, really small…and at one time we had [approximately] 28 members,” said Cathy Gatson, President of Pink Ribbon Partners. “I’ve been in here [approximately] 24 years…this group just clicked.”

The group’s members come from various backgrounds, but they have one thing in common. 

Each member has, at one point or another, been diagnosed with breast cancer. 

Ada Rash, a Winchester native and member of the organization, spoke of how essential their roles are in helping each other through such challenges. 

“It’s essential because it’s such a difficult thing to go through,” she said, referencing both chemotherapy and radiation treatments. “I just had to do radiation, but I had thirty-five treatments, and that’s a lot.” 

When asked what she wanted others to know about Pink Ribbon Partners and breast cancer in general, Rash quickly responded. 

“Do your mammograms once a year because that’s how they found mine,” she said. “It’s a life-saving opportunity.” 

Other members of Pink Ribbon Partners include Carrie Marstella, who serves as secretary, and Joyce Ratliff, treasurer, among many others. 

The group plans on meeting once every month at a local restaurant for a meal, talking with new members about breast cancer while also talking with returning members about a number of different topics. 

“In June, we have a picnic and everything…we decorate for the Fourth of July…in December, we have our big Christmas, and we go out somewhere and..eat and exchange Christmas ornaments,” said Gatson. “[Those are] our two big events of the year.” 

While the group hopes to return to activities like participating in the Relay For Life races, their connection remains strong. 

“The togetherness that we have…it’s a blessing,” added Gatson. 

“We are just a family of sisters,” stated Rash.
