Kiwanis International has long advocated for the nation’s youth in more ways than one.

Locally, the Winchester Kiwanis Club is doing so once more.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the annual “Walk With a Child” event occurred at the Walmart Supercenter at 1859 Bypass Road from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

“‘Walk with a Child’ is our biggest event of the year,” said Chelsea Reece, the newly elected President of Winchester Kiwanis Club.

Throughout the year, the Kiwanis Club raises funds in a number of ways – including auctions and more.

Ultimately, the organization raised approximately $16,000 in preparation for the “Walk with a Child” event.

That amount was able to be used toward assisting children in need of new clothing.

“We work closely with family resource officers from the [Clark County Public] schools to coordinate with the families of children who need clothes,” Reese added. “They meet us at Walmart, and we provide $100 vouchers to each student who wants to get new clothes.”

In total, approximately 140 children were served.

They were far from alone in selecting what items they would like to take home.

Numerous volunteers – including members of the Winchester Kiwanis Club – were present.

Among them were Cindy Banks, executive director of the Winchester-Clark County Chamber of Commerce, and Greg Yates, Executive Director of Partners in Education.

The George Rogers Clark High School girls’ soccer and girls’ basketball teams also assisted.

“It’s a very powerful experience for volunteers as well,” Reece added. “It’s just a really cool impact for all parties.”

The organization is determined to continue serving youth and strengthening the community.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Winchester Kiwanis Club will hold its annual pancake breakfast.

“What’s most rewarding is the direct local impact we have on the community,” Reece said.
