Clark County Board of Education decides on tax rate

At a recent meeting of the Clark County Board of Education, a decision regarding taxes was on the minds of many.
Ultimately, the Clark County Board of Education decided to go with a compensating plus 4% tax rate.
The Board of Education provided its rationale in a recent Clark County Public Schools (CCPS) Board Report.
“It is the recommendation that the BOE adopt the 4% revenue rate of 66.8 for real property and 67.5 for personal property so that we can maintain our business of supporting and educating the students of Clark County,” it stated. ““This would be a decrease for real property by 0.7 cents. By lowering the rate, tax payers will save money on their taxes from last year, while the district can better keep pace with inflation.”
As might be expected – although the School Board voted 5-0 in favor of the measure – there was some disagreement.
“Though we were in high hopes that they would take only [the] compensating at a rate of 64.3%, they have chosen to go a different route,” wrote Clark County Property Valuation Administration (PVA) Jada Brady in a Facebook post. “To be clear, the over rate is lower than last year, but they will receive, per their own calculations, around one million additional dollars. This is due to the higher residential evaluations. Evaluations that are constitutionally mandated to increase as homes sell for higher prices.”
Listing several initiatives approved during the past year with the use of local and taxpayer dollars, the Board of Education added, ‘The responsibility that we, as the Board of Education, have to the community, taxpayers, and parents of the students who attend our schools is that we must be fiscally responsible and good stewards of the taxpayer dollars we receive while also providing for the needs of our staff, educate our students, and maintain our facilities.”
The Clark County Board of Education’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the 1600 W. Lexington Avenue offices.
