The end of September will feature the 17th annual “Friends of the Poor Walk” on Saturday, September 28th. The walk will take place at College Park at 30 Wheeler Avenue from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. It’s sponsored by the Winchester Conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP), which is one of the oldest and most effective charitable organizations in the world.
The “Friends of the Poor Walk” occurs yearly and nationwide to support local projects run by many of the 4400 Saint Vincent de Paul conferences in the United States. The Winchester conference, which is located at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parish within the city, uses funds raised to stock their food pantry that serves between 60 to 90 families monthly. Last year, thanks to the efforts of over 50 walkers and participants, over $26,000 was raised.
Rich Gomez, co-chairman of the Friends of the Poor Walk, has stated that he hopes to have a successful walk this year.
People can show up at College Park to donate or register for the walk. Walkers will be given a free t-shirt. Refreshments will also be provided.
