Producing a state champion at any individual level is quite an accomplishment. 

However, the George Rogers Clark High School track and field team can boast two state champions in a single category. 

During the 2024 KHSAA Class 3A Track and Field Championship at the UK Track & Field Complex in Lexington on June 1, Teigh Yeast and Joey Hill came in first place in the Girls’ and Boys’ Triple Jump, respectively, leading a pact of GRC qualifiers who finished strong throughout the day. 

Yeast, whose father, Terry, is the Athletic Director at George Rogers Clark High School, finished first in a field of 23 competitors with a mark of 38-01.75. 

The next closest, Alexis Howard of Simon Kenton High School, showcased a mark of 37-09.50. 

Yeast also finished fourth among over 20 competitors in the long jump competition with a mark of 17-06.50 and fourth in a field of over 20 competitors in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 58.53. 

Yeast, a multi-sport athlete who plays volleyball and basketball, will return to GRC as a junior next year. 

Hill, a just-graduated senior, finished first among 21 competitors in the triple jump, scoring 46.-01.25. 

In second place, Taurian Smith of Central High School in Louisville had a mark of 45-06.25. 

Hill also finished third among 20 competitors in the long jump with a mark of 21-07.00. 

Yet Hill and Yates were not the only competitors that stood out for GRC. 

The team took home first place in a pair of unified contests. 

Mayson Letcher and Xavier Holbrook took home first place in the Mixed Long Jump Unified Competition. At the same time, Letcher and Jackson Rogers received first place honors in the Mixed 2×50 Meter Relay Unified. 

In the Boys’ 3200 Meter Run Finals, Cooper Wasson finished third among over 20 competitors with a mark of 9:09.31. 

Bailey Howard, daughter of Clark County Public Schools Superintendent Dustin Howard, finished tied for fifth among nearly 20 competitors in the girls’ pole vault with a mark of 10-06.00. 

While competing in the 300-meter hurdles, Reese Patrick finished in the top 10 in the girls’ high jump. 

Also finishing in the top 10 was the boys’ 4×200 meter relay team, which included Hill, Rogers, Mahni John, and DeAndre McWilliams. 

Additional competitors for GRC included Lennon Smith and Liam Parido.
