With the school year nearing a close, there’s still plenty to talk about and celebrate regarding progress and other events in Clark County. 

A recent Clark County Public Schools Board of Education meeting demonstrated so. 

Numerous student groups and athletic teams were recognized, while other events were touched on as well. 

According to a district newsletter, “[T]he Board changed the venue to the GRC Auditorium to allow them to honor as many students as possible.” 

While not all students could attend, well over 100 students did indeed. 

From the athletic field, the board recognized the girls’ basketball and soccer teams, as well as the boys’ soccer team. 

While the Lady Cards’ basketball squad won their third consecutive 10th Region tournament during the 2023-24 season, the Lady Cards’ soccer squad also took home the 10th Region crown en route to a state tournament appearance. 

The Cards’ soccer team ended a long streak of 40th District Championship victories by Montgomery County, defeating them in the finals en route to a 10th Region Tournament appearance. 

Individual athletes in swim and indoor track were also recognized, with Joey Hill winning state in long and triple jump, Ethan Hatfield qualifying for state in swimming, and Bryce Alfrey and Hayden Arvin finishing as bass fishing team BASS Nationals qualifiers. 

Also recognized were those involved in the GRC JAG Program, which stands for Jobs for America’s Graduates.  

Students in the program competed against other JAG Teams statewide in the career development competition. 

Among placers were Carter Gibson, who finished 1st in Financial Literacy, while the team of Leila Daniels, Tatiana Toba, Cameron Turley, and Allan Doan finished 2nd in Business Plan. 

The Clark County Area Technology Center awarded ATC Recognition Industry Certifications to individuals studying information tech, information and support services Educational Opportunities Program (EOP), Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification automotive maintenance and light repair, and AWS (American Welding Society) 2F GMAW. 

Others were recognized in the fields of National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) Healthcare Core, State Registered Nursing Assistant (SRNA) and Medicaid Nurse Aide (MNA), Skilled Trades Commercial Carpentry TRACK, Physical Therapy Technician/Aide Certification, Residential Carpenter Assistant, Future Health Professionals (HOSA), SkillsUSA, Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP), and Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA). 

The board also recognized Susan Bishop of ADECCO as an Outstanding Community Partner for her great work in partnering with employers to help facilitate a smooth transition into the workforce for GRC graduates. 

In other news, the building that currently houses Phoenix Academy and other programs will be officially named after suggestions are solicited. The new Clark County Preschool is estimated to have approximately 70% of the project complete. 

Certainly not least, George Rogers Clark High School Principal Luke Toy stressed college readiness at the high school, noting that GRC has 531 students enrolled in AP courses, 441 enrolled in dual credit courses on campus, and 97 enrolled in dual credit courses at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC).
