On a dreary Tuesday morning, many are curious about the outdoor weather conditions and their possible effects. 

Some information has been provided. 

“Severe thunderstorms and potential tornadoes are indicated for Winchester and Clark County throughout the day,” said Winchester Mayor JoEllen Reed. “I’m asking all citizens to please stay weather aware and take all precautions to remain safe.”

“We’ve got some severe thunderstorm warnings for your area,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Kevin Farina, speaking at approximately 9:45 a.m. “It ’ll be out of here in about an hour, and then we’re going to get a break…and then more strong stuff is going to develop this afternoon.” 

According to the National Weather Service’s website at https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Winchester&state=KY&site=LMK&textField1=37.9973&textField2=-84.1883&e=0, a tornado watch is in effect until noon ET. 

Asked to elaborate further on what time in the afternoon events could occur, Farina spoke. 

“It’s going to be more [of a] pop-up [basis],” he said. “Your best chance will…probably be more like 2 to 5 [p.m.] or 2 to 6 [p.m.].” 

Farina also spoke of the difference between a tornado warning and a tornado watch. 

“[A] tornado warning means we see it on radar or it’s been reported. [A] watch means conditions are favorable for tornado development,” he said. “If you hear a warning, that’s the time to take [immediate] action.” 

Suggestions were also provided on what actions might be taken regarding severe weather, particularly a tornado warning or watch. 

“[Find an] interior room of the house. You don’t want to be outside and you don’t want to be near windows,” he said. “A tornado could come from any direction.” 

Clark County was under a tornado warning from 9:32 a.m. until 10 a.m.
