Glenn Horton Thornberry, 108, widower of Pauline Thornberry, passed away Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Rosemary C. Brooks Place. Mr. Thornberry was born in Elliot County on March 13, 1909 to the late Charles Vinzel and Ethel Horton Thornberry. Mr. Thornberry enjoyed playing basketball in high school. He attended Western University majoring in business and banking in the late 1920’s. He began his banking and grocery business in Olive Hill before moving to Winchester in 1935 and had been a businessman in Clark County for over 85 years. He served as the president of Thornberry Markets Inc. and was a past president of Kentucky Food Stores. He was a past president of the Winchester Lions Club as well as their oldest member. He also served as a District Governor in the Lions Club. In 1974 he and his family had the privilege of attending the National Lions Club Convention in California. His hobbies included, walking, golfing, gardening and all U.K. sports. He was a member and Elder of Salem Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry Lee (Ruth) Thornberry and Larry D. (Margaret) Thornberry. Nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jay Douglas Thornberry; a sister, Madge Thornberry Rice.
Services will be conducted 2:00PM, Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Scobee Funeral Home by Donald F. Stanley, Jr. Pallbearers will be Reggie Morris, Doug Thornberry, Mike Thornberry, Tim Thornberry, Jeff Thornberry, Brian Thornberry, Derek Thornberry, Brian Graham, Mark McIntosh and Kevin Flynn. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Winchester Lions Club. Burial will follow in the Winchester Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:00PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
