As with any City Commission meeting, both new business and informational items were covered on Tuesday, Feb. 6th. 

However, a special presentation was also made. 

While tasks included confirming a number of roads to be closed for upcoming events got covered, Madelyn Goeing was recognized for her performance at the Distinguished Young Women (DYW) of Kentucky state competition. 

The request to close Lexington Avenue from Main Street to Church Avenue for the period between Monday, Feb. 12th, to Friday, Mar. 1st, was approved for the demolition of the property at 71 South Main Street. 

Adam Kidd, COO of Dam Holdings and owner of the building, stated the following in email communications: 

“Main Street will remain open during this project. On Feb. 15th, the crew will begin the demolition of the structure, and on this day, the parking spaces and North Bound Lane in front of 71 South Main Street will be closed to limit the risks to public safety. Two-way traffic will continue by use of a lane shift into the turn lanes. After Feb. 15th, traffic will return to its normal flow on Main Street,” Kidd said.

Any additional may be necessary depending on certain conditions. 

The request to close Depot Street on Saturday, Apr. 13th, from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m., was also approved to coincide with the Abettor 5-year market. 

Abettor Brewing’s location is 128 N. Highway Street. 

A request made by Winchester First to close streets for this summer’s Rock the Block Concert Series was approved as well. 

On May 17th and Jun. 7th, Main Street from Lexington Avenue to Broadway Street will be closed for the occasion. 

On Jul. 26th and Aug. 9th, Depot Street from Main Street to Washington Street will be closed just the same. 

As mentioned, City Commissioners recognized George Rogers Clark High School senior Madelyn Goeing with a Service to the City Award. 

Goeing placed high overall in the prestigious Distinguished Young Women of Kentucky competition, finishing third runner-up among over 30 contestants while winning first place overall in the fitness portion and as preliminary winner in the self expression category. 

The proclamation read as follows: “This Service to the City Award is given to those citizens who distinguish themselves through outstanding achievement, selfless sacrifice and humble service in their representation of the citizens of Winchester. We gratefully commend Madelyn Goeing for her relentless effort, dedication, and passion in achieving third place in the 2024 Distinguished Young Woman competition.” 

An extension for completion of the 7th Street Extension Project has been approved, with the completion date moved to Dec. 31st, 2027, with no additional funds added. 

The request by the city of Winchester for an extension was met with approval following correspondence with Jim Gray, Kentucky Secretary of Transportation.
