A Winchester elementary school will host a holiday extravaganza for its students and their families next week.

Shearer Elementary School is holding a Holiday Storytelling Event at its 244 East Broadway Street campus on Monday, Dec. 11th, from 5:30-7 p.m.

The school’s family resource coordinator, Kristi Carter, provided insight on what to expect.

“It’s an opportunity for our families to come to Shearer with their students. They will be able to visit their classrooms. We will be doing a Shark’s Showcase. So, they will have work displayed, and parents will be able to talk to the teachers,” Carter said.

Misty Strain from the Clark County Public Library and Anne Hall, the school’s former librarian, will be on hand to recount different holiday tales.

“They are going to bring some of our Christmas stories back to life. They will be doing storytelling,” Carter said.

School officials hope that the storytelling will spark an interest in reading among its students and their families.

“We are encouraging literacy and are always trying to get our families to read together. We try to encourage them to read at home and show that reading is fun,” Carter said.

To keep the festive vibe going, Santa Clause himself will be in attendance, and gifts will be given out thanks to a generous benefactor.

“The FOP [Fraternal Order of Police] Lodge 34 donated toys for Shearer families. They do a rotation every year, and this was Shearer’s year to receive the donation,” Carter said.

All in all, Carter said she hopes the event will be a fun way to end 2023.
