On a brisk Saturday morning, dozens gathered at College Park on Wheeler Avenue.
They were each ready to support a good cause.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, the local Winchester Walk N Roll for the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky began at approximately 9:30 a.m.
“I’m glad that everybody was…able to come out and support what we’re doing here for the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky,” said Amie Moore, who helped organize the event. “Everybody’s here for [that] one reason.”
As previously written, the event has personal significance for Moore, whose son – Lincoln – was diagnosed at birth with spina bifida.
A condition affecting the spine, spina bifida occurs when an infant’s spinal cord fails to develop or close properly and is often apparent while in the womb.
Several complications may result, including walking and mobility issues, fluid buildup of the brain, bowel and bladder control issues and more.
Before Saturday’s Walk N Roll even started, an online auction helped raise money while delivering numerous items of interest – including Cincinnati Reds tickets, various gift cards and items donated by Abettor Brewing.
A total of $3,031 was raised for the event.
“That’s amazing,” Moore added. “Money’s nice to raise to go toward [SBAK] for other things that the association does for everybody, but it’s really about the awareness.”
To assist with the event further, members of the George Rogers Clark High School Beta Club – which included players from the school’s basketball and football teams – made an appearance.
“They’re here to help out with little things here and there,” Moore added.
Moore also contacted Gleam and Glow Princess Services in Lexington to entertain the children who were present.
A trio of employees came to the event, dressed as Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and Mirabel Madrigal from Disney’s 2021 animated film, “Encanto.”
While staying in character, Cinderella explained how she arrived at the event.
“My fairy Godmother told me to come. She said that lots of little kids would be here,” the princess said. “It’s been a lovely time getting to know [everyone].”
Also present was Maria Baker, the administrative manager of the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky.
While pointing out that the organization – celebrating its 40th year – will have its statewide Walk N Roll event in Louisville on Saturday, Oct.28 Baker talked about how last Saturday’s event got started.
“[Amie] wanted to take this on, and we’ve supported her in any way we can,” Baker said. “We have educational programs. We have a newborn outreach [program]…we help families all over the state of Kentucky and in southern Indiana.”
As far as the walk itself, individuals were welcomed to continue walking around the exterior of the park after all did so once together.
With another year of Winchester’s Walk N Roll event having passed, Moore expressed gratitude.
“This is about everyone involved,” she said.
