A man charged with hitting a deputy sheriff and giving him a concussion was sentenced to four years probation Thursday.

Cory Cox, 23, of 518 Kimberly Drive, pleaded guilty last month to multiple charges from a series of events in May 2016.

Cox was sentenced to five years for first-degree criminal mischief and then 60 days each for two counts of fourth-degree assault, attempted burglary, resisting arrest, public intoxication and terroristic threatening. All the sentences will run concurrently.

Clark Circuit Judge Jean Chenault Logue granted probation on the condition he complete a state-approved long-term drug treatment program.

Deputies from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a person going door to door along Kimberly Drive. When they located Cox at 516 Kimberly Drive, he was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech.

Cox tried to run from deputies by climbing the fence to get back in his own yard but fought with Deputy justin Gurley and Lt. Johnny Graves. Following a struggle, they put Cox in the back of a cruiser and took him to the Clark County Detention Center.

Upon arrival, Graves opened the back door to the vehicle and Cox took one step out before head-butting Graves, knocking him unconscious. Cox was eventually brought under control with pepper spray and a Taser.

When Cox pleaded guilty in April, he told the judge he had been taking Lyrica and drinking that day and did not remember anything.
