The George Rogers Clark High School Cardinals may have fallen short in their bid for a second straight state championship in March, but the city of Winchester wanted to remind the young men that they are still champions in local eyes.

Coach Josh Cook and the Cards were honored with a special certificate for achievement by the Winchester City Commission last Tuesday.

The proclamation reads: “In recognition of the hours of practice, mental and physical agility, great effort and overall dedication that resulted in four straight 10th Region Championships, 2022 State Championship, runner-up Champion in 2023 and Elite Eight appearance in 2021.”

In addition to the accolades listed above, in 2022 the Cards were the first team since 2007 to go undefeated against state competition and were the first team to four-peat the 10th Region since the famed Maysville Bulldogs of the late 1940s.

Upcoming street closures

The Commission voted to approve several street closures for the coming months.

On April 19, the area around Washington, Maple and Oliver streets will be closed from 1-5 p.m. for a Prom Red Carpet event hosted by the Senior Prom Committee.

On June 30, a section of North Highland Street stretching from Broadway to Washington streets will be closed from 6-8:30 p.m. for First Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School.

On Sept. 29, Main Street from Lexington Avenue to Broadway Street will be close from 5:30-8 p.m. for the annual Rally 4 Recovery event.

In other business, the Commission…

• Approved an internship for Winchester First.

• Approved a mutual aid agreement with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government where city emergency personnel will come to the aid of Lexington in response to “natural or man-made disasters” as long as there is no detriment to Winchester.
