A Winchester man stands accused of assault following an alleged incident this weekend.

Fifty-five-year-old David Sparks was arrested by the Winchester Police Department and charged with first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault and third-degree possession of a controlled substance after police were called to a residence on North Main Street during a domestic disturbance early Sunday morning.

According to the arrest citation, law enforcement encountered a “male and female yelling at each other” through an open door when they arrived on the scene.

An officer stated that they “observed the female get pushed through into the door,” which slammed shut, and noises from inside the residence suggested a physical altercation.

The officer stated in the citation that they “pushed the door open and observed a male pushing on the female’s throat.”

The male was identified as Sparks.

The woman – whose name was redacted in the citation – alleged that Sparks “had struck her multiple times in the head” and put both of his hands “around her throat and squeezed,” which impeded her regular breathing.

The officer stated in the citation that they observed “red marks” on the woman’s neck that were consistent with “marks from hands.”

While searching Sparks, the officer located half a pill of suboxone in his pocket.

Sparks is currently listed as an inmate at the Clark County Detention Center, according to the jail’s website. His bond is listed as $3,500 cash.
