There are many reasons to anticipate spring: flowering trees and shrubs to enjoy, spring break, warmer temperatures, and thoughts of summer plans. The biggest reason to anticipate spring for members of the faith community is the celebration of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once again, they will join together for the annual Cross Walk and Good Friday Service, sponsored by the Winchester Clark County Association of Churches.

This year, the Cross Walk will begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 7, in the parking lot of Winchester Municipal Utilities. Everyone is invited to join and share in carrying the cross down Main Street to Lexington Avenue, where it will turn and go to First Baptist Church. Dr. John Lepper, interim pastor of First Baptist, will share a devotional and pray when the cross is set. Participants will then enter the church sanctuary for the Good Friday Service.

Cynthia Carr, the pianist for First Baptist Church, will do the prelude, and Allan Hutchinson, president of the Association of Churches and pastor of First Church of God, will pray and welcome those attending. David Thomas of First Baptist Church will lead congregational singing of “The Old Rugged Cross” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

Renny Ross, pastor of Oasis Foursquare Church, will share the message. Jeff Gaines, vice-president of the Association of Churches and pastor of Christ Church Winchester, will make the offertory comments. All money collected will go to the Debbie Fatkin Transient Ministry, administered by Clark County Community Services. Donations should be placed in the offering plates at the back or front of the church, and checks should be made payable to “Clark County Community Services.” These funds provide food, gas, and/or a hotel room for those passing through Winchester who become stranded with car problems, lack of sufficient gasoline to reach their destination, etc. The funds have also been used to pay for bus tickets for people to get home and are administered in cooperation with the Winchester Police Department.

Erika Gaines of Christ Church Winchester will provide special music, singing “Redeemer.” Ed Burtner, former mayor of Winchester, will do the closing benediction. A postlude will follow.
