Our View: Get involved with cleanup

Don’t let the name mislead you, the Main Street Clean Sweep is about far more than downtown Winchester.
The event, set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, is part of a regional initiative by Bluegrass Greensource to motivate thousands of volunteers across 20 Central Kentucky cities to participate in a focused litter cleanup event.
People will fan out to clean streets, sidewalks, streams and parks — removing litter, garbage and debris.
Volunteers will gather at City Hall and then spread out across the downtown, but this event can certainly be used as an opportunity for anyone to participate and focus on beautification in their neighborhood, around their business or even just an area they know that needs attention.
Hundreds of pounds of trash will likely be collected in just a couple of hours.
The event can spur formal participation or be taken as informal impetus by just allowing it to be the motivation.
Events like this are critical to making our community look great. You never know when someone might visit the community and decide it’s a place they want to live, work or establish a business. It is critical that Winchester and Clark County is always prepared to make a great first impression.
Cleanup events like this also go a long way toward helping promote community pride by all citizens, something which is truly priceless.
