Part of an organization focused on lending a helping hand needs a little help itself.

Officials with the Clark County Community Services revealed late last week its You Can Help fund needs a little assistance of its own.

This is very much like a discretionary fund to help those in the community who may fall through the cracks of other services.

The fund pays for projects for individuals or families in dire need. Clark County Community Services Executive Director Debbie Fatkin has said previously clients who have been helped through this fund were referred by other community agencies, and efforts to get assistance through other channels were exhausted.

It is impossible to measure the positive impact it has made in the community but all you have to do is listen to the heartfelt thanks by those who have benefited to see that it is significant.

In the past, this fund has helped pay for medical bills, built access ramps for senior citizens and one for a local youth who uses a wheelchair, repaired a leaky roof for an elderly couple and replaced a furnace.

We hope to see foundations, nonprofits that help others and business step up to lend a hand so this can continue.

Far too often, things like this go unaddressed. It is our most vulnerable citizens — seniors, children and those facing no some hardship — that suffer.

The Clark County Community Services’ You Can Help fund is a small way to help overcome this challenge in our community.

The community can help by donating to the fund. Checks can be made to Clark County Community Services, with You Can Help in the memo line, or cash donations can be dropped off at the center, located at 30 Taylor Ave.
