A woman leaving Winn Avenue Market who suffered a health incident and crashed her vehicle late Tuesday morning has passed away.
The victim was identified as 63-year old Lena Mae Howard. Her death was confirmed to The Winchester Sun by her family as well as the Winchester Police Department.
At 11:31 a.m., firefighters responded to a call about an accident at the corner of Winn Avenue and Jackson Street, where a female driver of a maroon Chevrolet Silverado had hit a wall and what appeared to be shrubbery. At the time, the cause of the accident could not be confirmed.
It has since been learned that the cause of death was a heart attack caused by a seizure, as the speeds and collision don’t appear to be a factor in the death according to the Winchester Police Department.
According to Jacki Campuzano, an employee of Winn Avenue Market, the incident occurred just after the victim had stopped by the location.
“She pulled up to our window, she got her Ale-8s, and when she hit the wall, one of the customers said ‘There was a wreck out there!”, said Campuzano. “[I] called the ambulance. She was trying to leave. [We] said, ‘No, you can’t leave’. We took the keys out of her truck, and finally the ambulance got here. As they were putting her in the ambulance, they were doing chest compressions. It tears me up.”
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Scobee Funeral Home, with services on Friday July 29th at 10:00 a.m.
