Winchester police say that a death investigation is underway after a body was discovered in town earlier this afternoon.

The body was discovered on Aubrey Lane after a neighbor noticed a foul smell emanating from the area around the corner from their shed, according to Winchester Police.

Units were dispatched to the scene around 3 p.m., and once they arrived, they discovered a dead body in a state of advanced decomposition. Investigators could not determine the identity or sex of the body, and they were also unable to determine if foul play was involved, according to the Winchester Police.

Police officials say that the body will be sent to the Kentucky State Medical Examiners office in Frankfort tomorrow morning. Any results from testing performed on the body are not expected for several weeks.
