Anyone in need of stain removal or pet deodorizing products now has a genuinely local option to turn to for their cleaning needs.
Winchester residents Steven and Stephanie Evans own and operate Big Bentley Pet Supply out of their home.
The couple produces, bottles, and ships their line of three products to 11 locations across Kentucky.
The Evans’ beloved Great Dane, Bentley, served as the inspiration for the company’s first product and is its mascot. The canine sadly passed away last fall.
“In the last few years of his life, he was having accidents all over the house, and I needed to figure out how to get it up,” said Steven Evans.
His background in the pharmaceutical and deodorizing industries came in handy for figuring out how to clean up after Bentley.
“I would formulate some very potent cancer research drugs and different things like that,” Evans said. “I learned to work in a lab. I learned to use scales and mixtures and pH meters.”
Evans learned the art of deodorizing at his next job, and his experience there helped him formulate his own odor nullifying solution.
“I took a biosynthetic mixture, and I formulated my own cleaner, and then I thought that I could help somebody else. So I decided to start my own company,” he said.
The company was founded in March 2021 and started selling products in July.
“My first product is a stain remover. It’s ready to use. You don’t dilute it or anything. It’s not just like concentrate. That product is used on any soft surfaces. It can also be used on sealed wood, hardwoods floors and things of that nature,” Evans said about his company’s offerings.
The company’s other two products are a solution that destroys urine from cats and dogs, and a laundry booster that, alongside regular detergent, removes stains and odors from clothes.
So what makes Evans products stand out from his competitors? For starters, it is not as diluted as mass-produced cleaning products.
“I formulate my products to make them strong,” Evans said. “It will work right off the bat, and you don’t have to use the entire bottle just go get a stain out of whatever you are trying to get it out of.”
Evans uses triple distilled water to keep the integrity of his cleaning mixture intact. He explained that the chemicals used to sanitize tap water would dilute the mixture’s strength.
A Wolfe County native, Evans said his entrepreneurial aim is to help where he grew up, especially since its residents often have to travel an hour or more to get to work.
“My overall goal is to add jobs to the Appalachian area,” he said. “I would love to be able to hire employees and improve folk’s quality of life.”
Big Bentley products are found in Winchester at Full Circle Market, Gasoline Alley and D&S Hardware.
