Dr. Doane: Newborn deliveries, especially at night, present unique challenge
No day is the same for Dr. Leigh Ann Doane at Sterling Women’s Clinic.
“I feel like my day changes quite a bit,” she said. “On a day when I am in the office, I can see a variety of different types of patients. We offer full-spectrum women’s health care. We can see children, teens, women during their pregnancy, mid-life women’s health during menopause, and senior care as well.”
Doane is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. She has practiced with Sterling Women’s Health in Winchester since 2017, after she completed her residency at the University of Kentucky. She and the practice’s four other doctors also deliver newborns and perform surgeries.
Newborn deliveries, especially those that happen at night, present a unique challenge to Doan.
“The biggest challenge is just identifying how urgent it is. Is it a healthy mommy and a healthy baby, or is it a mommy that is really sick and a baby that is really sick? And how quickly can we utilize all of our resources to help a sick mommy and a sick baby.”
Clark County Regional Medical Center usually takes care of newborns delivered around the 35-week point of the gestation process but is equipped to handle premature deliveries.
“Sometimes babies come when they want to,” Doane said, so the nursery team has to be ready at all times of the day. “There are nurses here 24 hours a day, gynecologists, obstetricians, and a pediatrician for the baby.”
