The Kentucky House and Senate passed bills establishing the commonwealth’s new legislative and congressional boundaries last Saturday, and if they remain intact, not much will change for Winchester and Clark County.

The area currently belongs to House District 73 and Senate District 28. The 73rd comprises all of Clark County and portions of neighboring Madison County. It is currently represented by first-term Rep. Ryan Dotson, a Republican.

Under the proposed bills, the district would include all of the county as well as areas near the Fayette/Clark County line and some Lexington neighborhoods in the Richmond Road corridor.

The 28th district currently comprises Clark and Montgomery counties and portions of Fayette. It is represented by Republican State Sen. Ralph Alvarado, who is presently in his second term in office representing the 28th District.

Under the proposed legislation, the district will remain mostly intact and would welcome Menifee County to its population base.
Clark County would also stay in Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District, currently represented by long-time Republican Rep. Andy Barr.

The bills currently await a signature from Gov. Andy Beshear. Republicans have a supermajority in both chambers of the General Assembly and could easily override a veto.

At a legislative preview session last week, Dotson said he expects legal challenges to the legislation.
