Cards’ cheer team performed its ‘cheertastic’ best at Saturday’s KHSAA Competitive Cheer Championship.

Even if ‘cheertastic’ isn’t a word, the Sun coined this catch phrase to describe the feeling of giving it your best and finishing strong; 10th of 17 teams at the state meet held at George Rogers Clark High School.

“We had a really good performance. I am so proud of this team,” Cards’ Cheer Coach Jerrica Whitaker said. “They worked hard all year long and went out there and gave it their all. I couldn’t ask for more from them as a coach. They have improved so much over the year and we are so happy and proud of them and their performance on Saturday.”

A trio of Card’s cheerleaders, all juniors, offered their opinions about the state meet and season.

“I felt relieved. We have come so far from the beginning of the year and even previous years before. I hadn’t been to state in two years so I wasn’t disappointed in placing top 10,” Sydney Wilkins said. “I feel like my team put their all out on the floor & that’s all our coaches have asked for. I’m excited to see how we can continue to grow through next year and get back to state to out-score our personal best.”

Brookelynn Adkins added, “I felt all my worries and anticipation disappear. In my high school cheering career I had never been to state. This year has been full of struggles with injuries and sickness, but we came together when it was needed. I was not disappointed about placing 10th because of how hard we have all worked. I couldn’t be more proud of my team and all we have accomplished. I can’t wait to get back to work. We can only improve from here.”

Power of positive thinking propels minds to succeed.

“After state I felt like me and my teammates could do anything we put our minds to,” Mallory Willoughby said.
