Main Street gets a good cleaning on Earth Day

By noon Thursday, more than a dozen large black bags filled with trash lined the sidewalk outside City Hall — the result of efforts by several volunteers who had spent the last hour picking up litter along Main Street and side streets.
“That’s a lot of trash for downtown,” said Shanda Cecil, Winchester’s code enforcement officer.
The volunteers were helping with the eighth annual Main Street Clean Sweep, part of Bluegrass Greensource’s Earth Day event involving 24 communities in Central Kentucky.
Amy Sohner of Bluegrass Greensource said the goal is to encourage people to celebrate Earth Day in the Bluegrass by doing something to improve the environment.
The cleanup included Main Street, Lexington Avenue, Cleveland, Wall, Hickman, and Gay streets, as well as Church Alley.
