The fund is donating $380,000 in equal amounts to 10 nonprofits that work to prevent homelessness or assist families affected by the opiod drug epidemic.

“We’re really grateful to receive this money and we’re honored,” CCHD Executive Director Terry Davidson said Wednesday.

She said the money will be used to provide beds and other essential household items for those who are making the transition from homelessness to a home.

The program, which started out as a homeless shelter at 19 Wainscott Ave. in Winchester, has expanded to include other services such as rapid rehousing and street outreach programs.

The money for beds and other and other items would be to help furnish apartments for those needing shelter.

“We serve those experiencing homelessness in 16 counties of the Bluegrass with street outreach programs, shelter, transitional housing, housing programs, and services to maintain long-term stability,” Davidson said in a Feb. 8 press release from the Governor’s Office announcing the grants. “Our goal is to end homelessness for each and every person.”

Gov. Andy Beshear created the Team Kentucky Fund in March 2020 to provide help to Kentuckians who were unemployed or experiencing financial hardship related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Community Action Kentucky evaluates applications for the money.

The fund is no longer accepting applications and will be closing after all pending applications have been addressed. The same nonprofit organizations that have been approved will also share in equal shares any money remaining from the fund.

“This gift wouldn’t be possible without the incredible generosity of Kentuckians,” Beshear said in a statement. “Going forward, let’s keep the spirit of the Team Kentucky Fund alive by donating directly to these amazing organizations or other nonprofits in our communities that speak to our hearts.”

“In Kentucky, we don’t just talk about our faith, we live it. Especially as we’ve faced this coronavirus pandemic, these agencies have helped our people most in need. We are proud to be able help them in turn.”
